Carbon negative Ice-cream

Our factory is carbon negative (and that is positive). We’ve put great affords to reduce carbon footprint. We’re energy neutral with our roof completely filled with solar panels. We use and re-use ground water. And we use all of the heat and cold in our factory again. And we work with local farmers to keep carbon in the meadow grounds.

De jong's ijs

The story of our ice cream factory begins in 1947 with pastry chef Harke de Jong in the Frisian village of Lippenhuizen. Every summer, he worked seven days a week crafting fresh scoop ice cream in his bakery. Using authentic ice cream carts, he brought his famous ice cream to the wider region. His secret? Fresh, local ingredients of the highest quality, prepared daily with real cream and full-fat milk. Harke called it "from fresh to fresh." Over 70 years later, the third generation carries on this tradition, transforming high-quality, sustainable ingredients into the most delicious ice creams.

Harke’s ice cream carts were the foundation of what would become a true ice cream empire. His son, Eeuwe de Jong, expanded the fleet of carts, opened a restaurant with his wife, and led the family business for many years. Eeuwe’s son, Romke de Jong, grew up immersed in the world of ice cream. Fueled by the passion of his father and grandfather, he began scaling the business alongside his father at a young age.

The company experienced rapid growth: from more ice cream carts to parlors, mobile ice cream stands, food trucks, and frozen yogurt shops. Eventually, all mobile sales activities were consolidated into a separate company, De Jong’s IJs Evenementen BV. The ice cream factory continued under the name De Jong’s IJs BV, specializing in the production of ice cream cups.

In recent years, the company has accelerated its growth. Today, De Jong’s ice cream is available in over 12 countries, sold under numerous brands and private labels. With a strong focus on automation and a lean organizational structure, the company can bring products to market quickly and at competitive prices. By targeting niches such as organic, low-calorie, vegan, high-protein, and sugar-free, De Jong’s IJs remains at the forefront of innovation.

"The company looks forward to the future and the remarkable milestone: 100 years of De Jong’s IJs. "
